*2 UNITS* HOUSTON ROCKETS MONEY LINE (+115) AND *1 UNIT* OVER 193 HOUSTON ROCKETS @ DETROIT PISTONS
Houston is 8-2 ML in their L10 meetings against the Pistons, having won each of the L3 straight and 6 of the L7 between the two squads. Detroit's only win in that span, was a 110-107 OT win at home in March of 2010. Looking over both of these two rosters, they both are in need of some major help, but the combination of Lin and Harden in their new roles should equate to a win here tonight. Both of these guys are high-quality role guys and have made their teams better (however brief it may have been in Lin's case) and both should have pretty big games here tonight in their first chance to shine in their new roles. Not too mention, Harden was just rewarded with a 5-year, $80 million contract extension today apparently. As for the Over, we loved it when it opened at 185, but it has since jumped 8 whole points to where it rests at now. Not sure we can fully support a full play on the Over here because of that jump, but each of their L3 meetings in Detroit has equated to at least 214 points scored or more, with both teams scoring at least 100 points or more in all 3 of those games. With the aforementioned play on the Rockets in mind, this one could end up getting out of hand in the scoring department. Run with the HOUSTON ROCKETS and the OVER here in this one.......
*2 UNITS* LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS (-3.5)
This one has bounced up and down from -4, but seems to have worked its way back down into the Grizzlies favor here. Just don't buy it. There are many reasons for loving the Clippers in this situation here. Let's start with the reasons not to though, because it is short and sweet really anyway. Grizzlies do have the revenge factor after getting bounced from the playoffs by the Clippers last season, losing in 7 games and allowing the Clippers to come back on them in the greatest fashion any playoff game has ever witnessed. The Clippers erased a 27-point 4th quarter deficit and used a 22-1 run to shock Memphis in a 99-98, game 1 win. But the series was incredibly tight, with only the Clippers series-clinching, game 7 win, being their only victory in which they beat the Grizzlies by more than 4 points. The Clippers 4 wins in that series came by scores of 99-98 (1); 87-86 (3); 101-97 OT (4) and 82-72 (7), so the Grizzlies definitely could keep this one close throughout. But that last game seemed to tell the actual story, and Memphis was pretty much utterly defeated by LA since the huge comeback in the series opener. Now for the reason the Clippers win here. The Clippers do have a chance to take over the attention of the city of Los Angeles after the Lakers tanked their season-opener just last night. The Clippers, at least for a game, can be the talk of the city, and these guys covet that honor more than anything else. Not too mention, the Clippers do somehow now own the Grizzlies with that deciding game 7 win and come-from-behind start to the series in game 1. As we saw yesterday with the blowout win by the Heat over the Celtics, when a team now owns another team, there isn't much that an off-season of revenge is going to do. If that makes sense. Memphis also has been horrendous to kick off a season, as they have posted a dismal 0-11 ML streak in their L11 games to kick off a season, with each of their L4 season-openers coming in blowout fashion, with the Grizzlies losing by at least 11 points or more in each contest. Not only have the Grizzlies lost 11 straight season-openers, but they are also 2-9 ATS in that same span, with their 2 ATS wins coming in an 11-point loss as a +12.5 dog, 4 seasons ago, and a 3-point loss as a +6 point underdog. In those 11 season-openers since the 2001-02 season, they have been beaten by double-digits 7 times in those games. They have only played 2 road games in that entire 11 game stretch though, but both of those games were double-digit losses. They are 1-1 ATS in those 2 games, as they did manage to cover that +12.5 point spread in the one. Both of the two road games came in the L3 seasons as well. Memphis is also 1-3 ML and ATS in their L4 first road games of the season, with all 3 of those losses coming by 10+ points. Take the LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS as the home favorites here........
*2 UNITS* DALLAS MAVERICKS (+8.5)
Okay, count us in if we are suckers for taking this Mavs team against the Jazz, the night after we called for the Jazz to cover against the Lakers, and they did us all one better and won outright, never even really being tested themselves. Now they get a nearly double-digit spread against a team they have dominated in recent years? Sure, Nowitzki is still out and yes this is a completely re-tooled Mavericks roster, but this Dallas franchise has performed huge in Utah in recent seasons, going 4-0 ATS and 3-1 ML when playing in the state of Utah, with the only Jazz win in that span coming by 2 points in OT last season. Dallas has also dominated the spread when playing against the Jazz in recent seasons, posting a 7-1 ATS record in their L8 games since December of the 2012 season. The Mavericks are also 7-1 ML against Utah in that span, with the only one loss coming in that 121-119 OT win by the Jazz in Utah in their last meeting in 2011-12. The points seems like too good to pass up here, and we just can't pass them up. Go with the DALLAS MAVERICKS as the road underdogs in Utah for this match-up...........
*2 UNITS* NEW ORLEANS HORNETS (+7)
Hornets would have covered against today's spread in each of the L3 meetings against the Spurs playing in NO. They have played there 3 times since January of 2011, and the Hornets have gone 1-2 ML in those 3 games with their two losses coming by a combined total of 5 points. That's right. They played the Spurs in New Orleans twice last season and the two results were: an 89-86 Spurs win in March, and a 104-102 Spurs win in January. Both of those games also saw the Hornets cover the small +5 and +4 spreads as the underdog as well. They are 3-0 ATS in their L3 against the Spurs at home and have gone 4-1 ATS in the L5 against them there. The Spurs have also lost in 2 of their L3 first road games of the season and overall they are 3-4 ML and 2-5 ATS in the L7 seasons in that situation with 2 of the 3 ML wins coming by 6 points or less. In that same span, New Orleans has posted a perfect 7-0 ML and near-perfect 6-1 ATS record in their L7 home-openers since the 2005-06 season began. San Antonio has a big match-up against Oklahoma City tomorrow at home too, so even if they do get ahead early here, the could put the second-team in, which would allow the Hornets to also take advantage of a back-door cover situation. On the other hand, Gordon is out for the Hornets, although he didn't play in any of the 8 preseason games so he wasn't expected to play, but this Hornets roster is incredibly young so its hard to know which way they will go. Get ready to feel old. The oldest player on the Hornets roster is Hakim Warrick, born in 1982, while no one else was born before 1985, and they have 5 guys overall (Aminu, Davis, Henry, Rivers and Miller) who were born in 1990 or later. Take the youngins and go with the NEW ORLEANS HORNETS here as the home dogs tonight.......
